Chinas Huading Awards, a vote-based awards show that celebrates top Chinese talent in athletics and entertainment, is getting a big Hollywood boost in its attempt to establish itself as Chinas answer to the Oscars. our editor recommends Veteran Producer Don Mischer to Direct Chinese Awards Show Quentin Tarantino, Nicolas Cage, Sam Worthington, Jeremy Irons, and Mathew Perryhave all landed in Macau to attend the awards gala that will be held Monday night at Sheldon Adelsons Venetian Casino in the former Portuguese colony turned Chinese entertainment enclave. Event insiders say Nicole Kidman also landed in Macau this morning and will make a turn on the red carpet. Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar Wai and Jackie Chan will be representing the Chinese industry, as willBooboo Stewart (Twilight, X-Men) and other upcoming Asian stars. Established in 2007 by Beijing-based media company Global Talents Media Group, the Huading Awards are held several times throughout the year at various Chinese destinations, feting stars in all fields. Veteran live-show producer Don Mischer — producer or director of numerous Academy Award shows, Olympics opening ceremonies, and Super Bowl halftime shows, along with the latest Obama inauguration — signed on in July to consult on a revamp of the event. Various Chinese events — such as the Golden Rooster Awards, the Shanghai Film Festival’s Golden Goblet Awards, and Beijing’s TiantianAwards — are vying for dominance in the live awards space, as the Chinese industry looks to offer its own alternative to the Oscars. STORY: China’s Golden Rooster Awards: ‘American Dreams in China,’ ‘Back to 1942’ Take Top Honors One of Hollywoods most experienced producers of televised gala events, Mischer said in July that it was the creative freedom of the project that attracted him: Most television has become kind of bottom-line business, where it’s profits and commercials that make the difference. Now I have an opportunity to work on a project I can take real pride in. The surprise attendance of top Hollywood names such as Cage, Kidman and Tarantino comes just weeks after industry A-listers Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman and Harvey Weinstein, among others, turned out in force at a surprise event in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao , where the countrys leading property and cinema developer Wanda Group announced it would be investing $8.2 billion to build a world-class film studio and entertainment complex. As Mischer said as he was gearing up to work on the Huading Awards, Everyone — movie stars and musical artists — in L.A. that I work with wants to establish a connection with their fans in China. He also added that after the Macau event, he plans to collaborate with Global Talents to bring the Huading show to Los Angeles in May 2014.

29, 2012, Miguel Ordenana, a biologist working on the survey, began culling a couple of weeks’ worth of mundane images of deer and coyotes. Hoping for a bobcat, he was startled to see the massive hindquarters and tail of a much larger animal. He later found the first photo of the lion, which showed his face. “From what I’d been told and what I knew, it was seemingly nearly impossible for a mountain lion to be there,” he said. “I almost thought I had seen Bigfoot or a chupacabra.” (A chupacabra is a ferocious, blood-sucking creature of urban legend.) Although a dead cougar was found in the park in 1995, and parkgoers reported sightings in 2004, this was the first photographic evidence of a lion inhabiting the park. In fact, the photos taken were the first known images of any mountain lion within the mountain system east of Cahuenga Pass, the National Park Service said. Sikich set humane traps with cameras, rigged to send images to his cellphone. At 2 o’clock one morning in March 2012, his cellphone rang, and he and other scientists hurried to the site, a Department of Water and Power property just west of the park. Sikich used a blowpipe to administer a sedative to the mountain lion and attached a collar with GPS and very high frequency radio signal technology. The collar regularly sends data to a website via satellite or cellphone tower. Biologists remotely track an average of eight locations a day, mostly at night when the animal is active. They watch particularly for “location clusters,” indicating spots where the lion has been feeding. Using the location data as a guide, they have bushwhacked or crawled through poison oak and thick vegetation to find what was on P-22’s menu.
One even rimmed a glass with salt and ground-up tequila worms. The next five took to the bar for the second round. OPENING NIGHT REPORT: NYC Landmark Rao’s Debuts in L.A. For the third and final round, the top three finishers were tasked with making a drink on the spot with a secret ingredient: pear. Winning it all was The Spare Rooms Edwin Cruz, who combined three varieties of pear with London No. 1 gin, Alfonso Oloroso sherry and prickly pear. It was just a well-rounded cocktail that had the right aspect of bitter and sweet and had a lot of depth, said judge Georgia Hardstark of Cruzs drink. She sat on the judging panel with Alie Ward, her co-host of the Cooking Channels Tripping Out with Georgia and Alie and co-contributor to the channels Unique Sweets. Added Ward: His drink was a little sweet at the outset, but for me the arc of a drink is important. So the first sip might be a bit sweet but by the time you get to the end of it, theres ice and it melts a little bit and it mellows. The flavor was great and it only got better as the ice melted. Among the other judges were A-list stylist and interior designer Estee Stanley (clients have included Penelope Cruz, Jessica Biel and Lea Michele), Paramount Pictures vp Liza Pano, andMeridith May, publisher and executive editor of The Tasting Panel magazine, which organized the competition, held at the Unici Casa event space. Between the cocktail challenges, guests sampled bites from Le Pain Quotidien, Toscana, Akasha, Twenty Degrees and Le Clafoutis and spirits including Breaker bourbon whiskey, made by the first legal distillery in Santa Barbara County since Prohibition. It was so much fun. I felt like I was on Top Chef, my favorite show, said Stanley. She supports Covenant House, she said, because what they do for homeless kids is so incredible. Helping over 55,000 kids last year is a remarkable task and so needed. No one should be homeless but to be left this way because of circumstances most kids have no control over is devastating and this place changes that. Other sponsors of the event included Delta, Pleasant Holiday Travel, Tesla and Funkin and co-hosts include THR culture editor Degen Pener, producer and restaurateur Laurent Zilber of Cafe des Artistes and HBOs Moana Casanova.
